Did you know that blackheads are actually a form of acne? Dig deeper and learn how stubborn blackheads can be treated and prevented.

Blackheads occur when a pore has opened to the surface and the sebum, which contains melanin, oxidizes and turns a black or brown color. Blackheads are not simply just dirt that can be washed away.

According to acne.org, blackheads are actually microcomedones that are non-inflamed blemishes on the skin (whiteheads are also microcomedones). If blackheads are left untreated, they can actually lead to the more painful, inflamed blemishes known as papules, pustules, nodules and cysts.

How to Treat Blackheads

Blackheads are treatable, though it’s important to remember that they will not simply disappear overnight. Squeezing or picking should rarely be done as it can cause damage and inflammation leading to more severe types of acne.

  • Benzoyl Peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide is effective in the treatment of blackheads because it works to dry up the blackhead and help it to flake away. Benzoyl peroxide should be applied to the affected area after first cleansing the skin. A moisturizer should be used after applying benzoyl peroxide or any other type of pimple cream because dryness and peeling may occur.
  • Blackhead extractor. A blackhead extractor is a small, stainless steel tool with a loop at one or both ends that is used to carefully extract the blackhead right from the pore without causing damage to the surrounding area. An extractor can be used if the blackhead looks as though it’s ready to come out. These tools should be disinfected prior to each use to avoid the spread of bacteria that could cause breakouts.
  • Regular exfoliation. Exfoliating the skin will help to get rid of dead skin cells that can clog pores and cause blackheads or further breakouts. Using an exfoliating facial scrub a few times per week can help to get rid of blackheads.

Blackhead Prevention

Once blackheads are treated, it’s time to learn how to prevent them from popping up again. The best way to prevent blackheads or any other type of acne is by cleansing the skin on a regular basis. The frequency will depend on each person’s skin type, but it’s generally okay to wash with a mild cleanser twice per day.

Another way to prevent blackheads is by keeping the skin clean. Touching the skin with fingers should always be avoided. Oil-free makeup can also prevent the clogging of pores. If one notices that these tactics aren’t helping too much, try washing pillowcases at least once per week. Pillowcases can easily become filled with bacteria either from the hair or skin which can clog pores and cause breakouts.

For stubborn blackhead removal and other types of acne, it’s possible that one may need to visit a dermatologist to see what they can recommend. They are able to prescribe topical and oral medications as a last resort for blackhead acne treatment if needed.
